An Introduction

When I'm running back from cross country practice, the world always seems ten times better than it does on the way there. Last week, as I jogged along the tree-lined streets of Urbana and delighted in the approaching conclusion of the day's run, I did a double take--there was definitely orange on that tree, and a dash of yellow on the one next to it--the leaves were changing color.

There is something wonderful about tumbling out of my blankets in the morning to a slightly chilly room that's the perfect temperature to keep me awake in the morning. People always say that time moves by sluggishly in the summer, but in fall, there seems to be always enough time to do everything. Time is roomier in the fall.

For me, fall has the best memories, and the best things always happen. Everything is clear and crisp and beautiful. My birthday is in October, as is Halloween. I love walking around Curtis Orchard picking out pumpkins and buying food, and I love the apple cider and doughnut afternoons that always follow a day spent there. Last year was the first year I didn't go trick-or-treating, and only because I had too much homework (and I'm not ashamed that I've trick-or-treated for 15 years!), and I still love looking at everyone in their ridiculous costumes bouncing around from door-to-door. The trees are shedding their leaves, but before they die for the year, they are at their most breathtaking.

Fall is the transition between sweltering heat and freezing cold, and lately I can relate. This is my senior year in high school, and between the homework, the running, the test-taking, and the college applications, I've barely had time to realize how close I am to the end, but also to the beginning. So many lasts are coming up this year--last cross-country race, last dances, last winter surprise party, last year living at home--and that makes me scared and sad. But at the same time there are so many firsts coming my way and I can't wait to see everything that is in store. This blog will be my chronicle of growing up and learning the important things.

  1. Fall is my favorite season! The temperature is perfect for bundling up; there's something about laying on a couch while bundled up in layers that makes me feel the cozies on the insides.

I hope this year the high school gods will allow for us Seniors to enjoy the non-academic side of our lives. Perhaps this year trick-or-treating won't be overruled by our homework demand.

Nevertheless, I look forward to this last year as a high school student. Good luck to you, fellow senior.

  2. Great first post, Vickie!

I thought it was very articulate and enjoyed the fact that you did not just start out saying "Hi, this is my blog, and this is what I'm going to write about." You drew your readers in by telling a small story to lead into your announcement that you're intending to blog through this last year of high school. This not only made the reading enjoyable, but allowed you to reveal some things about yourself to the reader, such as why you enjoy the season of Fall, that showed your personality well.

I also enjoyed the thought that "Time is roomier in the fall." Intriguing.

I can't wait to read more as we trek our way through our last year here (I have a feeling some of your findings will be quite similar to my own.)

  3. Beautiful first post, Vickie! This is nicely written and well developed. Fall is also my favorite season, hands-down. I love the weather, especially on those sunny fall days when the afternoon is fairly warm (but not hot) and the evening gets chilly. (Maybe that's why "Autumn Sweater" by Yo La Tengo is one of my favorite songs.) And the sight of trees in their array of autumn color is one of the most beautiful sights in the world, in my book. Fall was the only season I really missed when I lived in Los Angeles.

  4. This is a really good first post, Vickie! I really liked the imagery and thought that it was very well written. You articulate your feelings really well and I feel like I can relate 100%. I look forward to reading more!

PS I love the title of your blog! I think it's a great name for a blog about a senior in high school who is trying to figure out where the rest of her life will take her.

  5. I love fall too! The weather feels so great after the hot summer and there isn't snow yet to clog up the roads. I really like your description of the season change at the beginning of your post. I hadn't noticed the orange and yellow on the trees yet, something I enjoy most about fall, but you brought my attention to it! I'm definitely going to watch for it when I take a nice walk outside later.

  6. I have to say, I could really relate to this post. Fall DOES bring the best memories; it's something all of us that live in Illinois seem to enjoy each time that it comes around every year. That's one of the things I'm going to miss if I go farther than the Midwest for college. Also, I can't say having your birthday in October is a bad thing at all; mine is too.

I definitely enjoyed the imagery in your blog, as Erin mentioned in her comment. I also liked your last paragraph a lot. In so many ways, the last year here at Uni is going to be trying and will require efforts, but we have to take the time to realize the beauty and memories to be made all around us.

  7. This is a really good post! Time does seem roomier in the fall because even though I'm overwhelmed to do lots of things, I feel like I'm actually able to do it all. And it certainly does feel different from the winter because the days go by so quickly that by the time school is over it's almost pitch black, especially once soccer begins. Can't wait to read your next post!
